Context

India has one of the largest road networks of the world and is bound to have a high number of road-trippers.

Would you be ready for a road trip adventure in India? But wait, are you worried about finding clean and hygienic restrooms, restaurants, and other facilities while on the road? How about other important road trip considerations such as finding the right stay/getting a travel buddy or even creating a highly personalised itinerary based on your travel needs?

Udaan’s mission was to enhance the road-tripping experience in India. Swipe to find out how we helped them achieve it!

Discovery

We knew that in order to enhance the road-tripping experience in India, we needed to understand the distinct pain points of each type of traveller. To do this, we began by creating personas for three main categories of travellers: Young Travelers, Group Travelers, and Solo Travelers and also conducted 3 discovery interviews in each category.

We decided to take a more hands-on approach and conduct experiential research. We became road-trippers ourselves and travelled to various popular road-trip destinations across India to gain firsthand insights into the difficulties faced by travellers.

Synthesis

Through our exploration, we uncovered a fascinating realisation: road-trips are not a one-size-fits-all experience. Each category of travellers seeks something distinct and unique from their journey, highlighting the need for personalised road-trip experiences tailored to individual preferences.

During our immersive travels, we discovered a critical pain point affecting all road-trippers. While many relied on popular navigation tools like Google Maps to access information about nearby restrooms, restaurants, and amenities, we encountered a significant obstacle. The majority of roads passed through rural areas and villages secluded from the vast internet landscape, and accessible to only a privileged few. This created frustration and hindered the Indian road-trip experience.

Problem Statement

With learnings and insights from our discovery, we honed our comprehension of the problem space, enabling us to craft a concise problem statement that encompasses the context and hurdles we uncovered.

“How might we provide personalised road-trip experiences that cater to the distinct preferences of different traveller categories, while addressing the pain point of limited accessibility to essential amenities in rural areas?”

Solution

The solution we designed was a unique and holistic road trip experience that included transportation, accommodation, and personalised pitstop recommendations. Each traveller was assigned a dedicated trip designer who worked closely with them to curate a personalised trip that catered to their interests, travel style, and budget. In-person services were provided at the destination to ensure that travellers had a seamless and hassle-free experience.

Outcome

Customers experienced a newfound confidence and peace of mind during their road trips, with the presence of a dedicated travel buddy by their side. This personalised support provided them with a heightened sense of customer service, ensuring that their journey was smooth and enjoyable from start to finish.

By collaborating closely with a knowledgeable trip designer, customers felt a deep sense of privilege and exclusivity. The journey was no longer just a generic experience, but a curated adventure designed specifically for them. Through meaningful conversations and careful consideration of their preferences, the trip designer crafted a tailor-made itinerary that perfectly aligned with the customers’ desires, interests, and aspirations.

This human connection enriched the entire journey, making it more than just a road trip – it became a cherished memory and a testament to the power of thoughtful curation. Here's a video of the experience.
